The first Meat CSA share for the season!

CSA- Community Supported Agriculture is, in short, an investment up front in the local farmer of your choice and in return you as the consumer recieve both extrinsic and intrinsic rewards! Local Harvest is a good resource to find a CSA, Farmers Market or any other local goods in your area.

When I met my husband he at McDonalds three times a day, no, that is not an exaggeration. When you are a twenty-something studly Marine, you can do that I guess. The less gross part of that story is that he used to tell me he was a Carnivasaurus... loved meat. So, since I am often short on protein in the house, this CSA was insurance that I would be able to keep him fed in house and out of the drive thru.

For about $400 I bought a half share (both my produce CSA at Delvin Farms and the meat CSA offer a half or whole share) at Peaceful Pastures in Hickman, TN. Let's be honest, I picked this meat CSA because they were at the West Nashville Farmers Market when I signed up for the Delvin Farms CSA. A selling point being they were able to show us a bag of what a share looks like, that sold me. I also like that they make bath products (out of the fat), love the idea of Waste Not!

Their meat is grass fed and humanely raised and the processor is on the label as well. You can choose Regular, Pork Free, or Chicken/Beef/Pork only- We opted for the "regular" meat share which also includes goat and lamb. No, I do not know how to cook with goat or lamb but that is also why I opted to include these meats in my CSA. Time to learn and as I say Fear No Food! Also, my husband was interested the goat and lamb for our home since he has had both meats, must be the Norwegian and rural influence. I am looking forward to it!
Another nice thing about this family is the information they provide in addition to the meat such as recipes and cooking tips for the specific meats. Bonus! Again, they know how to market their product, kudos.
I wanted to share a picture of the meat so you will see just what a Meat CSA box looks like, a half share is one box every other month. Did not recieve goat or lamb this month but will see it in the future I presume. This month included a Pork Shoulder, 2-1 1/2 inch thick chops, 1 Beef Chuck Roast, 3 1# ground beef, 1 sirloin and 2 whole chickens.
I am curious to hear if you know the cost of similar products in a chain grocery- natural, grass fed, humanely raised meat?

Recipes and more to follow!

Here is the link to their site if you are interested ( I don't get any income, just providing the link in case you are interested) and they also have online ordering in addition to CSA and farmers markets.
